TRAPPED SHARK NOW LOAD-BEARING ASSET FOR BUSAN'S Q4 BUDGET, OFFICIALS ADMIT BETWEEN HAT SALES
Second rescue attempt for beloved canal shark Bukangi mysteriously coincides with a fresh plush restock.
Busan's tourism board confirmed Thursday that a second rescue operation for Bukangi, the 3.5-meter bronze whaler shark that has lived in a drainage canal since mid-September and drawn over 600,000 visitors, is proceeding 'on schedule, sort of, eventually.' The net-and-water-pump effort was initially announced for late September, then quietly rescheduled to October 2, a date that tourism officials note has 'no connection whatsoever' to the simultaneous restock of Bukangi bucket hats, keychains, and a limited-edition canal-water-in-a-bottle souvenir marketed as 'for authenticity.'
Marine biologists warn the shark is increasingly stressed from the shallow, warm water and should be relocated immediately, a concern city council members say they take 'very seriously, right after Q4.' A pop-up stall near the canal now offers tourists photos with a cardboard Bukangi cutout for 8,000 won, with a water bottle upgrade available for an additional 3,000. Attendance records show the stall has outperformed two municipal museums and one historic temple combined since the shark became trapped.
'The second attempt is definitely sincere,' said tourism liaison Hye-jin Park, adjusting a Bukangi bucket hat during a press briefing that ran eleven minutes longer than scheduled due to merch demonstrations. 'We simply refuse to rush a municipal icon. Also the hats are 40 percent off if you buy the plush.' Asked whether the rescue timeline was being influenced by revenue projections, Park paused, glanced at a nearby sales chart, and reiterated that Bukangi's wellbeing 'has always been, and remains, priority number two.'
