INDONESIAN PRISON RAZES LUXURY VILLAS, SPARES MINI-FRIDGE, CITES ZONING NOT MORALITY
Officials say whisky and pool were fine; the unpermitted golf simulator crossed a line no inmate should.
Excavators tore through ten unauthorized luxury prison units outside Jakarta this week, flattening sofas, flatscreens, and an in-progress golf simulator bay while workers reportedly paused mid-demolition to gently relocate a mini-fridge still stocked with miniature whisky bottles to a nearby table. Corrections officials were quick to clarify that the operation was not a referendum on inmates living better than most taxpayers, but a strict enforcement action against improper permitting.
"This was always about unauthorized construction," said corrections spokesperson Andi Wijaya, standing beside rubble that until Tuesday had central air. "Luxury is a spectrum. Unfiled permits are a bright line. The inmates understood amenities; they did not understand paperwork." Wijaya added that had the golf simulator simply been submitted for proper review, it likely would have been approved, possibly with a minor fee for the forest-access easement inmates had also quietly carved out.
Five officials, including the warden, remain suspended pending a corruption probe, though neighbors near the prison say the real injustice is architectural: several have begun inquiring with relatives about transfer logistics after realizing the demolished cells had better square footage, better amenities, and shorter commutes than their own apartments. "I pay market rate for a studio with no gym," said one local resident who asked not to be named. "These guys had a pool and never filed a single form. Honestly, respect."
