A storm that stayed offshore still managed to leave half the Big Island in the dark, which locals call 'very on brand.'
County officials confirmed Tuesday that Hurricane Lala achieved a 'best-case scenario' near miss of the Big Island, a technical meteorological term that residents have translated into plain English as 'still terrible.' The storm's eye never made landfall, opting instead to hover just offshore like a party guest who won't come inside but insists on ashing his cigarette through the window. Utility crews say the resulting outage map looks less like storm damage and more like Lala took the scenic route through every substation on the island out of spite.
"She stayed offshore in the technical sense that the eye did not RSVP," said a county emergency management spokesperson, addressing reporters by flashlight in a briefing room that was itself without power. Crews warn full restoration could take several days, citing downed lines, flooding, and a storm system that apparently never received the memo explaining that 'near miss' is supposed to mean 'nothing happens,' not 'nothing happens except for the widespread structural and electrical damage.'
Residents, meanwhile, report that the true disaster is generational: explaining to mainland relatives that yes, hurricanes do happen in Hawaii, no, it is not always a beach day, and no, aloha shirts do not repel category-one wind speeds.
